TOPIC: Hey NJ

Hey NJ 03 Oct 2006 21:55 #111244

An interesting article today in USA Today (the choice of more hotels worldwide than any other paper) about how many cities are looking to remove the restrictions they have on civil servants (e.g. firemen, police officers, etc.) requiring them to live in or within a couple of miles of their workplace. Apparently these laws are hurting recruiting efforts. It certainly seems to make sense. Do you have similar regulations?

Yes We have these regualtions....The problem with my town is they dont really pay you enough to afford to live in the city.

I just bought a home but it took me almost 2 years to be able to find one I could afford on my salary. Not that they dont pay us well but we're a "Burb" of Philadelphia. So we have some really ritzy neighborhoods.

We do have a clause in our contract that lets you move out of town after 5 years I have one more year to go so we'll have to evaluate that then. but even after the clause kicks in Police, Fire, & EMS have a limit to how far we can move..(15 miles I think) this is because in the event of an emergencey they want you able to get back into work in timely manner

That does make sense. Still as you noted, sometimes the town (or section of town) one works in does not equal the salary they receive and makes it difficult to find a place to live. Thanks for the info.
